“Chicken nugget” retweets break world record

Carter Wilkerson

Since March 2014, the most retweeted tweet was Ellen DeGeneres’ Oscars selfie featuring not only herself but also Jennifer Lawrence, Channing Tatum, Meryl Streep, Julia Roberts, Kevin Spacey, Bradley Cooper, Brad Pitt and Angelina Jolie. At the time of posting, the tweet has been retweeted 3,430,937 times.

Fast forward to April 2017, and teenager Carter Wilkerson from Nevada asks food outlet Wendy’s how many retweets he would need for a year’s supply of chicken nuggets. Within seconds, Wendy’s replies with “18 million”.

“Consider it done” replied Wilkerson, and set about plugging his cause with retweets coming from the likes of Apple, Microsoft, Google, Amazon and indeed Twitter themselves. Within two days the tweet had been retweeted one million times.

Also getting in on the act were United Airlines, offering Carter a free flight to any Wendy’s restaurant in the world.

Wendy’s promised that when Wilkerson’s tweet broke the DeGeneres’ record they would donate $100,000 (£78,000) to the Dave Thomas Foundation for Adoption, a charity set up by Wendy’s founder in 1992 to find permanent homes for foster children.
